    Is plaquenil an immunosuppressant

Plaquenil is used to treat or prevent malaria, a disease caused by parasites that enter the body through the bite of a mosquito. Malaria is common in areas such as Africa, South America, and Southern Asia.

Plaquenil and other antimalarials are the key to controlling lupus long-term, and some lupus patients may be on Plaquenil for the rest of their lives. For this reason, you can think of antimalarials as a sort of “lupus life insurance.” Dosage for Plaquenil. The adult dose of Plaquenil to suppress malaria is 400 mg on the same day each week. The pediatric weekly suppressive dosage is 5 mg/kg of body weight. The adult dose of Plaquenil to treat an acute attack of malaria is an initial dose of 800 mg followed by 400 mg in six to eight hours and 400 mg for two more days. Any experienced lupus doctor would never describe plaquenil as an immunosuppressant. It does not have the same immunosuppressant effect as the other immunosuppressants we usually talk about imuran, methotrexate, cellcept. and is NEVER used for immunosuppressive therapy, for example in the event of organ transplants.

Plaquenil is also an antirheumatic medicine and is used to treat symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis and discoid or systemic lupus erythematosus. This medicine is not effective against all strains of malaria.

  4. Physicians and patients consider hydroxychloroquine an immunosuppressant medication for lack of a more accurate descriptor. Perhaps an immunomodulatory medication would be a better term. The mechanism of action of HCQ has not been fully elucidated and is still a matter of debate, but it clearly has been shown to have anti-inflammatory properties mediated through modulation of the immune system.

Fear of Plaquenil - Autoimmune Disorders - MedHelp I was prescribed plaquenil for Sjogrens about 5 years ago by my rheumatogist. I too was afraid of the side effects and didn't realize that the disease would worsen, so I just didn't take the plaquenil. Two years later I began having pericarditis attacks and wound up in the hospital.
