    Retinal exam for plaquenil

Pattern of Retinopathy: Although the locus of toxic damage is parafoveal in many eyes, Asian patients often show an extramacular pattern of damage. Dose: We recommend a maximum daily HCQ use of 5.0 mg/kg real weight, which correlates better with risk than ideal weight.

Aug 01, 2009 I have been taking plaquenil for a little over 10 years and getting eye exams regularly. Suddenly I'm experiencing eye problems blilnd spots. I have stopped taking plaquenil, but now I'm being told by doctors that the damage is not necessarily reversible especially if you have taken it for a long time. Retinal imaging takes a digital picture of the back of your eye. It shows the retina where light and images hit, the optic disk a spot on the retina that holds the optic nerve, which sends information to the brain, and blood vessels. When you visit an ophthalmologist for a Plaquenil eye exam, your doctor will perform different tests to detect the presence or extent of retinal damage due to this medication. A Plaquenil screening may include a visual field test, OCT imaging, multifocal ERG, and photos of your eye.

Risk of Toxicity: The risk of toxicity is dependent on daily dose and duration of use. There are no similar demographic data for CQ, but dose comparisons in older literature suggest using 2.3 mg/kg real weight.

  5. Rationale for Screening. Hydroxychloroquine and CQ retinopathy are not reversible, and cellular damage may progress even after the drugs are stopped. When retinopathy is not recognized until a bull’seye appears, the disease can progress for years, often with foveal thinning and an eventual loss of visual acuity.

Research has shown that your risk of developing retinopathy is higher the longer you are taking Plaquenil. In fact, the incidence of retinal toxicity rises sharply in people that have taken it between 5 and 7 years. As a result, baseline testing should occur within the first year of taking the drug and then annually at the five-year mark. Dilated Fundus Exam. The optic nerves appeared healthy with a 0.3 cup-to-disc ratio. There was mild paracentral depigmentation of the RPE in the macula that spared the central fovea OU. The vessels and peripheral exam were normal OU Figure 1. There was no posterior vitreous detachment, retinal tears, or retinal detachments. Ancillary Tests After seeing MANY professionals including a neurologist, a retinal specialist, neuro-ophthalmologist, and undergoing MANY different tests, she was diagnosed with Plaquenil toxicity. She does have field of vision loss, mostly on things that are close up. She took Plaquenil for almost five years before having any symptoms.

DailyMed - CHLOROQUINE PHOSPHATE tablet Ampicillin In a study of healthy volunteers, chloroquine significantly reduced the bioavailability of ampicillin. An interval of at least two hours between intake of ampicillin and chloroquine should be observed. Cyclosporine After introduction of chloroquine oral form, a sudden increase in serum cyclosporine level has been reported.
